I had bought a large tam-tam for the composition Momente and set the instrument uo in the garden. Last summer I therefor made a number of experiments in which I excited the tam-tam to vibration using most varied objects — made of glass, card-board, metal, wood, rubber or plastic — which I had assembld from arround the house. In one hand I held a highly drectional microphone that was connected to a filter; the output of the filter was connected to a potenciometer, whose output was in turn made audible by speakers. Meanwhile, my assistant, Spek, improvised at the controls of the filter and the potenciometer. At the same time, we recorded the result on tape. Read the rest of this entry
